Interview: John Cusack discusses his character in Maps to the Stars and working with Cronenberg

Since his acting debut in 1983, it’s surprising that it has taken John Cusack over thirty years to work with David Cronenberg. The two just seem made for each other. Both completely unpredictable, with work that never fails to turn heads. Finally, the two collaborate on Cronenberg’s latest film Maps to the Stars. In Maps, Cusack plays Dr. Stafford Weiss, a masseuse/therapist to the stars, who is also the father of troubled child actor Benji Weiss (Evan Bird). Cusack provides some of the films strongest moments and is responsible for many scenes that will have viewers laughing and cringing at the same moment. We sat down with Cusack when he was in town for the Toronto International Film Festival to talk about his character, working with Cronenberg, and why films like High Fidelity would never get made today.
