Synopsis:
One of India’s greatest actors, Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi, The Lunchbox), stars in this beautiful and timeless fable. Umber Singh (Khan), a Sikh uprooted from his home by the violence that accompanied the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan, settles with his family in a safer locale. Already father to several girls, Umber eagerly looks forward to the birth of his first son — so much so that when his wife bears him another daughter, Kanwar, he insists that the child is a boy. Raising Kanwar as a male, Umber propels his entire family towards a strange and seemingly inevitable fate. “Qissa has sections of great power, and its message of patriarchal oppression is movingly conveyed” (Variety).
