Netflix: What’s Streaming? (July 2014)

Are you looking for a way to beat the stifling heat this summer? How about curling up in front of your TV with the hottest programming! Picture yourself in your sweet air-conditioned home with an icy beverage in your one hand and your remote in the other. Sounds pretty spectacular, huh? This month Netflix Canada has upped the ante with their available streaming options and we’ve highlighted our top five picks.

1. Orange is the New Black
Netflix Canada released the entire second season of the show early last month, but if you’re not a fanatic binge-watcher like us, there’s still time to watch what everyone at the water cooler has been discussing ecstatically. If you’ve never seen the show, don’t worry! You can easily catch up, as season one is still available to watch as well.

2. Battered Bastards of Baseball
A Netflix exclusive, this fascinating documentary reveals the true story behind the Portland Mavericks, an independent professional baseball team that broke attendance records in 1973. The rag-tag team included a left-handed catcher, a former Yankees pitcher, and a young Kurt Russell, whose father, interestingly enough, was the team’s owner. The little-known story of the team is sure to leave you cheering in your seat.

3. Hannibal
For those (like me) who’ve missed the first two seasons of this show when they first aired on Friday nights on NBC, Netflix Canada has you covered. The slick re-telling of the Thomas Harris books is a must see, thanks to showrunner Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) and captivating lead actors Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy.

4. Big Bad Wolves
This chilling, underrated Israeli horror film was championed by Quentin Tarantino and deserves to be seen. The taut thriller revolves around a vigilante police detective who teams up with the father of a victim to a heinous crime to interrogate the key suspect in a series of murders.

5. Inside Llewyn Davis
This critical darling was heralded by critics, but barely seen by the general public. If you missed this wonderful gem (or perhaps just want to watch the memorable musical numbers again), here is your chance to watch it. Oscar Isaac gives an award-worthy performance as the titular role and will break your heart as you watch his character’s bittersweet journey to try to become a successful recording artist. Truly one of the best films of 2013.
