Synopsis:
We’ve all seen the iconic 1932 photo “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” – featuring a group of steel workers taking a lunch break while dangling on a steel girder sixty-nine floors above the Rockefeller Building (which was under construction at the time). It’s a captivating image that is as equally dizzying as it is awe-inspiring but there’s more than meets the eye with this picture. It is a textbook example of the never-ending growth of Manhattan during the Great Depression. It is also a strong reminder of how America was built by a workforce of immigrant labourers who often worked in life-threatening conditions. Seán Ó Cualáin’s Men at Lunch examines this theme by searching out the personal stories of the workers lunching on the beam and how each of these individuals helped build not only the skyscraper but also a great nation and their own independence.
