Toronto Comicon 2019: Jaleel White

Best known for his role on the ‘90s sitcom Family Matters, Jaleel White brought lots of laughs to the Toronto Comicon stage Saturday afternoon. He spoke about the surreal experience of playing the beloved character Steve Urkel, taping his first episode, and answered those burning questions from loyal fans about the show and other projects including Sonic the Hedgehog.

Originally intended to be a one-time appearance on Family Matters, it didn’t take long for White and his character Steve Urkel to become regulars on the series. After filming the guest spot, his agent, unbeknownst to White, made a deal over the weekend to keep him on the show for the rest of the season. White returned to set the following Tuesday and stayed for 215 episodes.

Urkel touched many people, quickly becoming an inspiration to kids everywhere who were going through awkward stages themselves. But ironically, everything the character did clumsily, whether it was playing basketball, swimming, climbing, or jumping, White could do it very well himself. Something he finds both funny and flattering about the role.

While Family Matters is not planning a reboot in the era of television revivals, White says he’d never rule out playing a character again, but thinks the character needs to be played with a tone respectful to how much time has passed.

Nostalgia will never lose its importance among the human race. People yearn for a sentimental feeling, which nowadays is often found through re-experiencing an old television show. The children who grew up watching the series are now sharing it with their kids, introducing a whole new generation of viewers to Urkel’s geekiness.

Now a father to a nine-year-old girl, White spoke highly of his daughter while also taking a moment to poke a bit of fun, saying that she only cares about him being Urkel when it gets her to the front of a line at Disney World.

As the questions rolled in from fans, one wondered why he never did the Urkel dance while appearing on Dancing with the Stars. It’s simple: he wanted to win.

“It’s a tricky business,” answered White. “I don’t ever want anyone to think that because I didn’t dance as Steve Urkel on Dancing with the Stars that I have a problem with the character. No, I wanted to try to win and I knew I wasn’t going to get good scores in suspenders.”

Most recently, the actor offered his voice as Urkel in an episode of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, an animated reboot of the popular series, airing on Boomerang.
