Cory and Topanga make it official with new series ‘Girl Meets World’

One of television’s favorite teen couples is making it official: Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel, aka Cory and Topanga of ‘Boy Meets World’, will be returning to the small screen in the Disney Channel’s new series ‘Girl Meets World’.

A Disney Channel rep confirmed the casting, saying the actors “will reprise their hugely popular roles of Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence, this time as a happily married couple and parents to 13-year-old Riley, from whose point of view the story is told.” The pilot for ‘Girl Meets World’ is still in development and thus far no one has been cast to play Riley Matthews, meaning a nationwide casting search is in the works to fill this starring role.

Meanwhile, it isn’t known if any other original series members will return for the new show. For her part, however, Fishel posted a big thank you on her Tumblr for fans of the original series, and added, “We felt inspired to bring these characters back to life and to tell you more of their stories. Michael said to me, ‘Danielle, when I read what people say BMW meant to them it makes me so very proud of all of us.  I think it is important for us, for as long as we are fortunate enough to have this opportunity to do GMW, that we all look each other in the eyes every so often and make sure we know we have something of value to offer the audience.’ “

Among those who will be working behind the camera on ‘Girl Meets World’ are creator and executive producer Michael Jacobs, who created and produced the original series along with ‘My Two Dads’ and ‘Charles In Charge’.

While we don’t have news of a possible air date or any other news about the cast and crew, the fact that the two original stars have officially signed on the dotted line is good news for ‘BMW’ fans, since it all but guarantees that the show will now move forward into production. Here’s to hoping they find an actress to play Riley sooner rather than later!

If I'm not watching a good movie, it's probably because I'm writing about one. I keep adding new titles to my 'must see' movie list and I hope to watch them all before DVDs become obsolete.
