Movie Review: Think Like a Man

Dominic (Michael Ealy) and Lauren (Taraji P. Henson) in Screen Gems’ THINK LIKE A MAN.

This is a man’s world. But it’d be nothing without a woman, so the song goes. We’ve got plenty of woman-to-woman advice all over the map and yet we’re still struggling to get that ring. It’s about time a man sells out and gives us the play-by-play on how to change the game. As Steve Harvey dictates in his self-promoted film Think Like A Man, “He hasn’t proposed to you yet because you haven’t required him to.” Okay, you asked for it. We’re declaring war. And in war, there are no rules.

We’ve heard about the 5-date rule, whether or not it’s 3 days or a week, but in this flick, it goes to the extreme. We’re talking death sentence, 90-day rule. And this is in relation to a 3-month probation before receiving a benefits package. This experiment is played by Meagan Good who represents a good girl that always gets played by jerks like Chris Brown that run off with a hand-written “It’s been fun” note addressed to the wrong name. I’m glad we didn’t resort to online dating jokes, but the cookie jar reference just took any seriousness out of the movie.

Nobody wants to categorize themselves as the hopeless romantic, the single mom, the non-committer or the mama’s boy, but if you’re any type of human you’ll be able to associate yourself to one of the many experiences played by the deliciously sexy cast. That is, if you’re not dealing with a total child like Jeremy (Jerry Ferrara) who’s had the same couch since college and dates a girl taller than him. Even his own girlfriend Kristen (Gabrielle Union) doesn’t want to be around him and gets along better with the Italian interior designer (although I’m not so sure that was actually the point). On another note, Taraji P. Henson and Michael Ealy have the best chemistry on screen, hands down. And I’m not just saying that because their relationship is the steamiest, I’m saying it because no one can say no to Michael Ealy and breakfast in bed.

For all you Tyler Perry fans, Think Like A Man gives you all the fun real relationship talk without the window breaking and woman-gone-rogue action. At the end of the day, every soldier wants to go home and shove their tongues down someone’s mouth. Check this movie out if you want to see beautiful people making out all day and offering you just a glimmer of insight to the all-too-typical stereotypes that every normal person has to endure in the theatre, if not in real life.
