First trailer for 'Lola Versus'

If you loved the quirky rom-com ‘500 Days of Summer’, then check out the first trailer for the new comedy ‘Lola Versus’ (R). Greta Gerwig plays the titular Lola, a young woman happily planning her wedding to the man of her dreams. When her boyfriend unexpectedly dumps her just weeks before their wedding, however, she spirals downward into crying and power-eating potato chips.

Determined to come to terms with her new single status, Lola enlists the help of her close friends to shake her out of her funk. Her ensuing adventures with sex, love, dating, and her own personal hang-ups give her an eye-opening experience about what it means to be a single woman and how to deal with life after love.

Fox Searchlight, which also delivered ‘Summer’ to moviegoers weary of sappy romantic comedies, is no doubt hoping to repeat their success with that film, which made a bona fide star out of the quirky-cute Zooey Deschanel and propelled her from indie fame into her very own anti-romantic TV show, ‘New Girl’. If you love watching Deschanel, then you’ll probably fall hard for Gerwig, who has a similar sensibility and an irresistible charm.

Not sure where you’ve seen Gerwig before? She’s had supporting roles in films like ‘Arthur’, in which she played the hapless billionaire’s working-class love interest. But she’s just now coming into the spotlight as a major actress, and this first trailer for ‘Lola’ nicely shows off her comic talents with both physical comedy and more subtle moments that call for a well-timed line or raised eyebrow. Gerwig has a way of making her dramatic lines sound real, not contrived, so even if the plot of ‘Lola’ sounds a little familiar, she’s refreshing enough that she could turn it into this summer’s must-see hit.

”Lola Versus’ is directed by Daryl Wein (‘Breaking Upwards’), and is co-written by Wein and Zoe Lister Jones, who also stars in the film as one of Lola’s well-meaning friends. ‘Lola Versus will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 24 before moving to a wider theatre release on June 8.
