Have you seen Don McKellar?

Interview: Emily VanCamp on CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

The term “Canada’s sweetheart” has been historically used to label Mary Pickford, Rachel McAdams, Tatiana Maslany, Missy Peregrym, Ellen Page and Sarah Gadon, to name just a few. One name that has also come up time and time again since her start on Are You Afraid of the Dark? is Port Perry native Emily VanCamp. The cherubic actress has left an indelible mark on audiences with her varied roles on TV’s Everwood, Brothers & Sisters, and Revenge, as well as her memorable scenes on film as Sharon Carter (undercover as Kate/Agent 13) in Captain America:The Winter Soldier. Her fans will be delighted to see her role expanded in the new Captain America: Civil War, where grows closer to Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers and exhibits a different side of Sharon.

As big fans of Emily ourselves, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with her in a cozy roundtable interview while she was in Toronto on a promotional stop. The following were our questions.

Scene Creek: Let’s settle this once and for all. Are you, personally, Team Cap or Team Iron Man?

Emily VanCamp: Personally, I’ve seen the movie a couple times now and I totally understand where Iron Man is coming from. You know Tony’s got a point, let’s be honest. It’s interesting that it’s Captain America who is going a little bit rogue in this, which doesn’t seem like his style. He seems more like a rule follower, but he really takes a stand in this film and that’s really great to see too. So you see both sides and that makes the movie really interesting.

Scene Creek: In the film, family is tremendously important to (your character) Sharon. She learns from her Aunt Peggy to “compromise when you can; when you can’t, don’t.” What have you learned from your three sisters and, extensively, your Captain America family from the film?

EVC: Oh, well in terms of my sisters, when you grow up with people the pool of learning from siblings and experiences are endless. We’re constantly learning from each other to this day. With family that’s much more of a deep, emotional journey. In terms of actors from the movie, you know, it’s amazing to watch how people work. You learn so much. A lot of these guys have years and years and years of experience and it’s just fun to sit back, take it all in and soak it all up. I learned a lot doing this movie. Just even being behind the scenes of a movie of this scale, you can’t imagine what goes into making this, it’s incredible.

Scene Creek: In March, Elizabeth Olsen and yourself helped launch the Girls Reforming the Future program for Marvel. Can you talk a little about that initiative and did you get to meet the finalists?

EVC: We got to meet the five finalists at the Los Angeles premiere, which was so cool! You look at these girls, they’re so young, and you think, “wow, the places they’ll go, it’s amazing.” It’s an initiative to get girls invested  in science, technology, and math. There is a world in which those things seem intangible for young girls but no, this is your world too! Step into it! They really are extraordinary girls. I think it’s amazing that Marvel is backing that initiative, it’s so great.

Captain America: Civil War opens in theaters on May 6th.
