‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ takes top spot with $41.2 million debut

We knew ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ would likely take the top spot over Easter weekend, but even so the movie outperformed expectations, pulling in $41.2 million over the weekend and a total of $51.7 million since its early Thursday opening. That’s the third highest opening for star Channing Tatum, the second highest ever for The Rock, and (amazingly enough) the best ever for Bruce Willis. Despite the

‘The Croods’ debuts at number one with $44.7 million

The animated family film ‘The Croods’ debuted higher than expected this weekend, raking in $44.7 million to land in first place. That’s slightly higher than the three-day total for another notable Dreamworks hit, ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, which raked in $43.7 million over the same time frame. ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ has magical $80 million weekend

‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ was the clear winner at the box office this weekend, debuting in first place with $80 million. Disney’s CGI-heavy prequel to the classic Frank L. Baum fantasy is the highest opener yet for 2013 and managed to find a place as the fifth-highest opener yet in the draggy pre-summer months.

‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ tops small box office weekend with $28 million

The box office got off to a disappointing start for the month of March, with three new releases failing to perform well and the top twelve earning a combined total of just $94.4 million, which is off nearly 40% from this time last year. Leading the way was ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’, which landed in first place with a meager $28 million.

‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ pulls in $25 million on opening weekend

The fifth film in the ‘Die Hard’ franchise opened with $25 million on opening weekend, which was enough to put in in first place at the box office but was a bit of a disappointment for the franchise. ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ pulled in a total of $33.2 million over the four-day Valentine’s weekend but that still left it trailing behind its predecessor ‘Live Free or Die Hard’, which pulled in $38.2 over a four-day period back in 2007.
